What Are the Lived Experiences of Black Male Graduate Students in Counselor Education Programs?
Ward, Courtney Danielle
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University
In the phenomenological study presented researchers explored the explicit lived experiences of Black males currently enrolled in a CACREP-accredited graduate counselor education program. The study's purpose was to provide a first-hand contextual understanding of the academic rigor, challenges, social relationships, and support experienced by Black males in these programs. By documenting the Black male graduate counselor education students' lived experiences, as told in their own words, this study can be used as a resource in identifying the status of Black males in CACREP-accredited graduate counselor education programs. This study can also provide counseling program faculty members with insight into how their attitudes and behaviors influence the perspectives of Black male students' experiences within the educational setting (Michel, Hays, & Runyan, 2015). Semi-Structured interviews with Black males were employed to illuminate their stories and voices as a basis for advocating the presence of minority graduate students, specifically Black males, among graduate counselor education programs. Lastly, the study's purpose was to serve as a catalyst for further research in this much-needed area pertaining to counselor education, diversity, multiculturalism, and advocacy.
