The Effects of Exercise on Math Anxiety for College Students

The research has established that physical activity is beneficial in reducing overall tension, stress, and anxiety. The problem to be investigated was which type(s) of physical activity is/are best for college students who suffer from math anxiety? The theoretical foundation of the research was based mainly on the self-efficacy theory. Students see physical activity as beneficial to their health, thereby improving their self-efficacy. This makes a student who has math anxiety feel more in control, gives them more confidence, and reduces their overall anxiety toward mathematics. This was a simple qualitative research study. The undergraduate students at a small university of around 5,000 students were sent a demographic questionnaire regarding their physical activity and perception of their math anxiety. Purposeful sampling was used to get a sample of students who represented a wide variety of physical activity habits; those students were interviewed. A focus group was then chosen to gather more qualitative data on their physical activity habits and their perceptions of its influence on math anxiety.
