A Study of Value Priorities among Adolescents in Public and Private Schools.
Farmer, Eyleen H.
Considering that values and value systems are determinants of human behavior and that the school system is a primary agent of values inculcation, this study assesses whether the school setting has an impact on the value priorities of students. The Rokeach Value Survey was administered to 68 students of both sexes attending three local high schools in Shelby County, Tennessee. The schools included a public high school, a private church-related school, and a private school not associated with a church. A comparison of the three groups of students revealed an overall similarity of value orderings across schools with only six of the 36 values showing a significant discrepancy. The public school and private church school results were more closely related than either was to the private non-church school. Sex was a significant factor in the ranking of only two values. The overwhelming congruence of adolescent value systems in all three schools suggests that factors other than the school are more consequential in determining value priorities. Included are 12 tables, a bibliography, and the study instruments. (Author/KWL)
