A Study of Experiential Education and Its Relationship to Constructivsm.
Prohaska, Elizabeth
This paper explores the significance of experiential learning in promoting scholarship from a constructivist point of view. Chapter 1 examines the historical perspectives and educational theories that form the basis to experiential education. Chapter 2 explores the work of Jean Piaget, giving a description and explanation of his theories and how his theories relate to experiential education. Chapter 3 discusses the differences between Piagetian assessment methods and behavioralist assessment methods. In chapter 4, a description of the Master's Thesis project is provided along with a discussion on set up, materials involved, and methods and tasks used with 6 children ranging in age from 5 to 12 years old. Chapters 5 and 6 discuss how the use of the clinical method can improve understanding of children's construction of their own knowledge and how those findings can be used to help improve science curriculum. Chapter 7 highlights the need for experiential learning and constructivism to be taken into consideration in curriculum development in order to meet the developmental and intellectual needs of children. The final chapter discusses the importance of the community in learning, and the relationships of the people involved. Contains 88 references. (AA)
