Increasing Parent Involvement in the Learning Activities of Intermediate (Grades 4-6) Students.
Tomlinson, Ancelyn E.
Conducted in a school serving mainly Hispanic children, this practicum implemented an intervention designed to increase parents' involvement in the learning activities of their children. Practicum goals were to: (1) increase parents' attendance at Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meetings; (2) increase parents' attendance at parent-teacher conferences; (3) improve and promote parents' consistent monitoring of their children's homework, ensuring the completion of 720 assignments; and (4) increase parents' participation as volunteers in and out of the classroom. To achieve these goals, a parent volunteer program was developed. By means of a series of workshops, parents were informed of the importance of participating in their children's educational programs. Practicum evaluation data indicated that the parent volunteer program was a positive and successful experience for teachers and volunteers. All projected goals were achieved, namely, 80 percent of parents attended PTA meetings; 90 percent attended parent-teacher conferences; 90 percent of students completed 720 assignments; and 35 parents volunteered 1,225 hours of service. Related materials are appended. (Author/RH)
