Increasing Positive Mother/Baby Relationships through Play.
Farmer, Deneita Jo
This practicum was designed in response to the observation that very young children who accompanied Head Start parents assisting in Head Start classrooms were observed to be either extremely withdrawn or extremely active. The practicum was implemented to improve the relationships of parents and their infants and toddlers. Practicum goals were to provide parents with opportunities to increase: (1) parenting competencies; (2) knowledge of infant and toddler development; (3) knowledge of parent education resources; and (4) feelings of self-esteem. To attain these goals, six informational workshops, six mother-baby play sessions, and home visits were conducted. In addition, a booklet describing activities for mothers and their babies was developed. Evaluation data showed that 18 of 22 parents participating in at least one component of the practicum indicated an increase in self-esteem and in their knowledge of the value of high quality play and infant-toddler development. Furthermore, observations indicated that mothers participating in home visits had increased the quality of play interactions with their babies. Related materials, including the activity booklet, are appended. (RH)
