Implementing a Program of Effective Instructional Practices and Interactional Patterns To Decrease Disruptive Behavior in an Elementary School and on the School Bus.
Hood, Emily W.
A kindergarten teacher employed in an elementary school implemented a practicum designed to decrease the number of students referred to the principal's office for disciplinary action. Additional practicum goals were to improve student behavior in the classroom, cafeteria, and school bus; and teachers' classroom management techniques. Teachers were encouraged to use approaches most compatible with their teaching styles in order to meet the individual needs of students. During each faculty meeting, time was set aside for "Discipline Updates." Tapes were reviewed, techniques were discussed, and practical procedures for managing student behavior were demonstrated. Each teacher was provided with a periodically updated discipline notebook which contained a variety of practical procedures for managing discipline problems. Cafeteria monitors and school bus drivers were asked to use selected strategies to manage disruptive students. As a result of the intervention, disruptive incidents decreased, and fewer students were referred for disciplinary action. Informal teachers' responses indicated an increase in their use of classroom management techniques. Teachers suggested that the program be continued and expanded to include additional behavior management Strategies. Thirty-five references are listed and related materials are appended. (RH)
