Increasing Performance Levels of Eight to Thirteen Year Old Speech Therapy Students by Utilizing Parents and Teachers in the Generalization Stage of Therapy.

A practicum addressed the problem of speech students who did not generalize therapeutically acquired speech skills into their mainstreamed environments. This lack of generalization resulted in an increased caseload for therapists because of re-referrals of students who had previously been dismissed from speech therapy. The goals of the practicum were: (1) to increase teachers' knowledge of speech therapy techniques; (2) to increase parent knowledge of speech therapy techniques; and (3) to increase parent/teacher perceived improvement in their children/students. Parents and teachers in a public elementary school in a rural northeastern community were trained through instructional conferences, demonstrations, and supervised participation in the therapeutic process. The techniques which were demonstrated and employed included cuing, positive reinforcement, and progressive desensitization. The results of the practicum were positive. Analysis of the data revealed that parents and teachers increased their understanding of the speech therapy process and that most parents and teachers perceived improvement in the generalized speech of their children/students; no perception of regression was evident. The continued employment of the program will undoubtedly prove to be cost effective since it is anticipated that students will be dismissed from therapy more rapidly and will less likely be re-referred.
