Increasing the Learning Experiences of Preschool Students through the Development of a Physical Play Environment.
Erimie, Rosemary F.
This report reviews a practicum designed to study and address problems of the physical play environment of a preschool which served children of 2 to 5 years. The goals of the practicum were to: (1) increase the amount of time children spent in physical play activities; (2) enhance the play environment by the addition of at least 10 pieces of equipment; and (3) use the school resources to improve school programs in play development. The school's financial resources were used to add equipment to the play environment. Inservice sessions for the director and teachers were planned. The sessions placed a renewed emphasis on learning through play and helped teachers meet their objectives through physical play activities. Each of the goals of the practicum was achieved. The children increased the amount of time spent in play activities each day and the preschool purchased 10 pieces of multi-functional play equipment. Questionnaires completed by parents revealed that the majority of parents felt that students' needs were being met through the increased emphasis on play activities. Respondents agreed that the preschool's programs had been enhanced by the development of an outdoor play environment. (Author/RJC)
