Assisting Kindergarten through Fifth Grade Teachers To Improve Their Parent Conferencing Skills.
de Smet, James A.
A speech pathologist designed and implemented a practicum study for the purpose of strengthening the conference skills of kindergarten through fifth-grade teachers at three elementary schools. The primary goal of the practicum was to provide the teachers with a method and the skills needed to promote effective cooperation between parent and teacher. A second goal was to help the teachers achieve a skill level at which they would feel comfortable during most teacher-parent conferences. Pre- and post-tests surveying teachers' perceptions of competence in seven areas were administered. Teachers were recruited to participate in the intervention. Orientation sessions for the teachers were planned and conducted. The program was supervised, maintained, and evaluated. Evaluation data suggested that the intervention was effective in improving teachers' social and communication skills. Appendices provide results of pre- and post-tests, measures employed, and other related materials. (RH)
