Improving the Quality of the Team Visits through the Development of a Training Program for Chairpersons and Team Members.
Schimmer, John, Jr.
This report describes the strategies of a young accrediting association in identifying, developing, and implementing a training program designed to help chairpersons and team members prepare for, and participate in, a school accreditation visit. The problem arose when the National Accreditation Commission of the Association of Christian Schools International determined that the schools would be better served if the accreditation program became more regionalized and the regional commission had more direct control over the program. A preliminary analysis indicated that the training program provided for both chairpersons and team members had been insufficient and ineffective. Chairpersons relied on their own background of accreditation experience and team members were receiving dissimilar instructions because there was no prescribed training program. Research revealed that most team members lacked adequate knowledge of the association's standards and policies. The study included a critical review of all past records and documents, including previous accreditation visits and team reports, a survey of former team members, a literature review, and interviews with knowledgeable accreditation experts. As a result of this study, the association's policies, standards, and procedures for accreditation were documented; a training program was developed; and a chairperson's manual was prepared that contained forms and instructions for all stages of the process, including guidelines for writing a team report and a sample team report.
