Study Circles in Paired Congregations. Enriching Your Community through Shared Dialogue on Vital Issues.
Topsfield Foundation, Pomfret, CT. Study Circles Resource Center.
This booklet is a practical tool designed to help bring about small-group discussions between religious congregations. (Study circles are democratic, small-group discussions in which citizens share their experiences, analyze the problems in their communities, and come up with ideas on how to resolve them.) The guide is organized in two parts. The first part of the guide explains in detail how to organize a small-group discussion program between two congregations and gives some particulars about large-scale, congregation-pairing programs. The second part contains first-person accounts by a dozen clergy and lay leaders about their experiences with study circle programs. The personal stories demonstrate that participants in the study circles have found them to be a way to become informed about community issues, to engage in problem solving, and to establish new relationships across lines of race, ethnicity, and religion. Four appendixes list additional resources, provide ground rules for useful discussions, compare dialogue and debate, and list the rights, responsibilities, and skills of dialogue. (KC)
