Exploring Academic English: A Workbook for Student Essay Writing.

The workbook is designed to teach college-level writing skills to students for whom English is either the native or a second language. An introductory section for students describes the use of a concordance and provides instructions for the using the workbook. An introductory section for teachers is also included. Six instructional units address specific academic writing issues, generally in relation to a word, concept, or process, and provide exercises and writing tasks. Unit topics include: (1) stating the topics ("issue, factor, concept"); (2) referring to the literature ("evidence, research, source"); (3) reporting the research of others ("according to, claim, suggest"); (4) discussing processes undertaken in a study ("identification, analysis, criteria"); (5) expressing opinions tentatively ("may, possible, unlikely, probably"); and (6) drawing conclusions and summarizing (concluding, summarizing, "clear that, thus").
