Earned Income Credit: SCANS Influenced Lesson Plan for Beginning 1 and Beginning 2. Curriculum Project, Spring 2000.
Santa Ana Coll., CA. School of Continuing Education.
This lesson plan is intended to teach students about the new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) law which provides "credit" or "refund" to low income families. The lesson can fit into any of five specific basal texts. Students should work in cooperative groups, with each group member having a specific responsibility (e.g., leader, recorder, reporter, or timekeeper). Seven stages in the lesson are outlined (warm-up and review, introduction, presentation, practice of new skills and knowledge, evaluation, application to students' own lives or new situations, and extension). Several class materials are needed. Overheads include: copies of checks, credit cards money orders, and cash; overhead transparencies of the W2 form; federal tax return forms; and a schedule EIC. Forms and information on two families are included. Handouts are also provided (at the tax consultant's, claiming Earned Income Credit, four families, and a word search puzzle). Spanish and Vietnamese language handouts are included. (Adjunct ERIC Clearinghouse for ESL Literacy Education.) (SM)
