Work with microcomputers should be included in the preservice teacher education program. Broadening students' horizons by making them aware of the scope and diversity of worthwhile uses of computers, questions to help them become discriminating, and modeling positive attitudes are each discussed. A first computer lesson in algebra is described, with illustrations of programing by students. Standard algebraic notation with BASIC are discussed, and further activities described. How to find and classify positive integral solutions to 1/a + 1/b = 1/c in beginning and advanced algebra classes is described. The computer finds the solutions, but students practice algebraic manipulation as they analyze the solutions for patterns. Extensions to challenge more capable students are included. (MNS)
