During its 20 years of existence the College Scholarship Service has made a continuous effort to improve the status of the professional administrator in the field of financial aid. One contribution has been the publication of a detailed book that describes the CSS need analysis system. This comprehensive guide includes information about the basic rationale, the economic principles, and the computational procedures used in the CSS system. By using the information provided in this publication, the financial aid administrator will be better prepared to consider individual adjustments that may be appropriate in the amounts expected from the student and his family in various instances, especially when the financial situation of a family changes or when additional information about the family's circumstances becomes known.
