Removing Roadblocks in Reading: A Guidebook for Teaching Perceptually Handicapped Children.
O'Connor, Katherine
Written for classroom teachers but also intended for educators, social workers, doctors, and others who work in specialized areas that relate to the development and educational progress of children, this book provides guidelines for teaching perceptually handicapped children. Included in this volume are discussions of general symptomalogy, current professional diagnostic techniques, and informal tests that teachers can use. Techniques and materials are presented which are applicable at grade levels ranging from the low primary to the middle and upper grades. Many possible adaptations are suggested for the economic situations existing in particular school systems. Also included is resource information regarding supplies, related bibliographic materials, testing materials, and professional organizations. Appendixes include a proposed reading-instruction plan, the poem "Johnny Had Better Learn to Read," and a glossary. (Author/KS)
