Course of Study for General Office Clerk. Grades Eleven and Twelve.
Denovchek, Josephine H.; Saunders, Gretchen L.
Designed to meet the needs of the community of Warren, Ohio, for competent office clerks, this course of study is presented as a sample that illustrates a format based on the instructional systems development (ISD) process. As a course of study for preparing students for entry-level employment as clerk-typists, file clerks, billing clerks, payroll clerks, mail clerks, receptionists, or reprographics operators, the guide is intended for use by teachers in preparing lesson plans for a two-year (junior and senior) high school program. Introductory material includes statements of the philosophy, list of ten objectives for the program, three-page course outline (by weeks) of the two-year program, and a four-page discussion of the general program strategy. The body of the guide consists of instructional outlines organized by task (e.g., type business letters, transcribe machine dictation) for both the junior and senior year. The outline for each task includes suggested number of hours, suggested lab performance activities, notes on instructional strategy, list of materials, supplies, and equipment, and notes on evaluation method. The junior year program covers acquisition of basic manipulative skills necessary to operate six different machines. The senior year program uses an office simulation to provide a realistic setting for refining basic skills, knowledge, and attitudes through actual practice. Included in the appendixes are a bibliography, safety rules, equipment maintenance guidelines, laboratory layout, rotation schedules for use of equipment, and example lesson plans. (JT)
