Cool School: An Alternative Secondary School Experience.
Anderson, James E.; Ridley, Ted
Described is an alternative secondary school program for adolescents with such problems as failure in school because of disinterest and drug abuse. Initial sections cover the school's development and major phases of the program (communication skills; instruction on the world, people, and ideas; involvement in the family and the community; and correlation of instruction to meet the individual needs of the student). Subsequent sections explain the following program components: the student body, the teachers, the school building and facilities, salient features of the Cool School program (including the role of the tutor), and community and school interaction. Detailed is a summary of one group's experience in Phase III (family and community involvement) of the program. Results of a program evaluation are presented for the areas of adolescent services; outcome by age on entrance; outcome by the last school grade completed on entrance; primary problem on entrance; family, place of residence, and their effects; sources of referral; prior legal involvement on entrance; length of time spent in the program; time out of the regular school program at time of entrance; and drug use patterns on first entering school. Appendixes (which make up a major part of the document) include a copy of the student's guide to Cool School, students' opinions of the regular high school and the Cool School program, a list of placements, evaluation forms, and tables with statistical data.
