Because of the limitations in the state of the art of using outcomes information in postsecondary education, and the important planning and management needs that exist in this area, a project was undertaken to (1) develop a set of coherent and widely accepted outcomes constructs that describe what an educational outcome is; and (2) develop a related system that can be used to organize outcomes information effectively for classification, analysis, and decisionmaking. A set of six attributes of an educational outcome was established, and five related factors were identified. In addition, three dimensions (continuum along which outcomes can be placed and related to each other) were on a small scale, and may have a number of uses throughout postsecondary education.
