Guidelines for Home Study in Vermont, 2002
Vermont Department of Education
During the 2001-2002 school year, over 2,100 Vermont children received their education in a homestudy program. Parents or guardians who decide to educate their children at home assume a great responsibility. In effect they are responsible for writing a curriculum, finding learning materials, providing resources, presenting instruction, adapting the lessons to each child's age and ability, reviewing and correcting each child's work and ensuring that each child's progress is assessed in each subject area at the end of the year. All this, combined with the everyday tasks of good parenting, presents a formidable challenge, which can be successfully met only by dedicated, concerned parents, willing and able to devote the time and effort necessary to make homeschooling work well. The guidelines for home study in Vermont are provided in this document. The following are appended: (1) Parents' Rights in Special Education; and (2) Forms Checklist.
