Controlling Program Evaluation
Cohen, Stepehn L.
Performance Improvement, v44 n8 p23-26 Sep 2005
Although the need for evaluation of training programs administered in organizations is recognized and widely discussed, program evaluation is not easy, and there exists a gap between discussion and practice. Cohen notes an absence of research efforts demonstrating the application of evaluation methods, particularly within control groups. This article provides a description of the essence of experimental design and how control groups can be used in a formal training evaluation strategy. Acknowledging that it may initially appear cumbersome, Cohen points out that the benefits of knowing whether a training program is indeed achieving what it set out to achieve far outweigh the time and energy required in using control groups to conduct proper evaluations.
