Nursing literature from 1893-1923 is reviewed for insights into what nurse educators believed to be the role of liberal education in the nursing profession, the anticipated effects of liberal education on nursing, and the relationship of the articulation of these beliefs to the development of collegiate-level nursing programs. The Juvenile Unemployment Center (JUC) scheme was intended as a palliative to the temporary unemployment of young people as the British economy reverted to peace-time levels after World War I.
