Times Out of Joint: The Life and Death of "The Brownies' Book."
Morah, Tanya M.
A study examined whether the authors of "The Brownies' Book," a magazine published in 1920-1921 for black children, achieved the seven goals they had set for themselves and whether the economic conditions of that period had an effect on the failure of the magazine. An analysis of the issues of the magazine reveals that the editors did achieve their goals, which were making black children (1) aware that being black was a natural condition; (2) familiar with the history and achievements of their race; (3) aware of the fact that other blacks had grown into intelligent, respected adults; (4) conscious of having a code of honor and action in their relations with white children; (5) fond of their own homes and companions; (6) receptive to the worthwhile activities in life; and (7) inspired to prepare for definite occupations. Because the United States was suffering from a post World War I economic depression, the publication was not financially successful, and although the magazine had many positive effects on black children, it ceased publication after 1921.
