Beyond Compassion? An Analysis of the Jane Addams Children's Book Award
Colabucci, Lesley; Napoli, Mary
Journal of Children's Literature, v43 n1 p28-36 Spr 2017
This study examines trends across recent Jane Addams Children's Book Award (JACBA) winners, with a focus on selection criteria and portrayals of social justice issues. The JACBA is administered by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom's educational affiliate, the Jane Addams Peace Association. Established in 1953, the award serves to engage readers in contemplation and dialogue about issues related to peace, social justice, world community, and racial and gender equality. Using an inductive process, the study examined how the JACBA criteria were manifested in the collection of winners in order to better understand both the content and tone of the books and how the books aligned with the mission of the award. To create a manageable data corpus, the authors opted to examine 10 years of winners (2005-2015), which resulted in a sample size of 31 books. By selecting the Books for Younger Children, the study limited the group of texts to picturebooks. This article discusses the JACBA criteria and which ones are most and least represented in the winners. The authors demonstrate how the books correlate with the mission of the award by meeting more or fewer of the criteria. The study reveals that only a small portion of the JACBA winners embody most or all aspects of the mission of the award and the spirit of the work of Jane Addams.
