Five medical school characteristics previously identified as related to choice of family practice as a specialty were examined, with tuition level, for relationship to specialty choice among U.S. medical graduates between July 1986 and December 1987. Patterns of degree selection in 1970-71 and 1978-79 are compared with each other and with that of men. Data on medical school faculty salaries from 1973 to 1983 are analyzed to reveal trends in purchasing power for basic and clinical sciences faculty by rank. Both groups reached a low in purchasing power in the 1980-81 period, and some differential was found between the faculty types and between academic ranks. (MSE)

Career plans, based on responses to the Association of American Medical Colleges' first annual graduation questionnaire concerning the racial/ethnic identity of 1978 U.S. medical graduates, are reported. The data show that the six racial/ethnic groups follow similar general trends, though group differences do appear. (MLW)
