Mustian, R. David. – Evaluation Practice, 1996
The major focus of this monograph is on statistical tools that aim to facilitate the description and explanation of social phenomena. The basics of data gathering are presented, and a number of major topics in data analysis are reviewed. A major contribution is the treatment of methodological issues. (SLD)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Data Collection, Hypothesis Testing, Research Methodology

Holian, John – Evaluation Practice, 1996
Describes record linkage as a data-generating technique, and presents a method for linking client records to live and stillbirth records, using 32,974 births in the Cleveland (Ohio) area. Biases that can enter the linkage process and general research issues related to record linkage are discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Birth, Case Records, Data Collection, Recordkeeping

Walberg, Herbert J.; And Others – Evaluation Practice, 1997
A computer program has been developed that analyzes data from interview transcripts, field notes, and other sources without a priori frameworks or the tedious categorizing of passages. The program finds repetitive association of words or ideas that characterize a verbal response corpus. An example of the program's use is given. (SLD)
Descriptors: Classification, Computer Software, Data Analysis, Field Studies

Greene, Jennifer C.; And Others – Evaluation Practice, 1987
An exploratory study of adult learning resulting from locally initiated community group programs illustrates approaches to qualitative and, more particularly, naturalistic evaluation. The use of a proxy list and the blending of independently derived abstract and concrete initial category labels proved particularly useful in the categorization…
Descriptors: Adult Education, Community Programs, Data Analysis, Informal Education

Ford, Sue – Evaluation Practice, 1987
Reorganization of data from a 1986 study of home care client placement for the elderly (N=18) allowed for user-specific reports to a variety of interested groups in the affected community. The techniques used to adapt and present the data are outlined. A short bibliography is appended. (TJH)
Descriptors: Caregivers, Community Health Services, Data Analysis, Evaluation Utilization

Krushat, W. Mark; Molnar, John I. – Evaluation Practice, 1993
After a mailed questionnaire and two follow-ups, hard-core survey nonrespondents were contacted to ask why they had not responded and what they would have answered had they responded. Results from 28 subjects indicate that efforts to pursue nonrespondents may be unnecessary, because bias resulting from nonresponse appeared minimal. (SLD)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Data Collection, Evaluation Methods, Followup Studies

Barley, Zoe A.; Jenness, Mark – Evaluation Practice, 1993
An approach to evaluation initiated by the Kellogg Foundation called cluster evaluation (not to be confused with cluster sampling) is described. Cluster evaluation provides a skilled, credible evaluator to work with a cluster of projects to assure that useful and defensible information is obtained for program evaluation. (SLD)
Descriptors: Community Programs, Data Collection, Elementary Secondary Education, Evaluation Methods

Richard, Alan J.; And Others – Evaluation Practice, 1996
The experience of 10 years evaluating HIV risk-reduction intervention for drug users leads to the argument that program outreach workers are part of the intervention continuum and have important effects on service delivery. Improving pre-enrollment data collection will address evaluation issues raised by pre-enrollment outreach contacts. (SLD)
Descriptors: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, Data Collection, Delivery Systems, Drug Use

Tims, Frank M.; And Others – Evaluation Practice, 1992
Data about outpatient treatment unit follow-up evaluations drawn from selected evaluation items in the recent National Drug Abuse Treatment Survey are reported. Directors and supervisors of 670 units completed surveys describing the follow-up studies. The majority of programs collecting follow-up data used the information for program change. (SLD)
Descriptors: Alcohol Abuse, Clinics, Data Collection, Drug Abuse

Molnar, Jack; Stup, Brenda – Evaluation Practice, 1994
This article describes an ongoing survey that illustrates how evaluators, working with program managers, have effectively used client-based data to monitor performance in the Social Security Administration. The value of client-based data outweighs the limitations and problems collecting it. Customer perceptions are a critical barometer of quality.…
Descriptors: Data Collection, Delivery Systems, Evaluation Methods, Evaluation Problems

Beer, Valorie; Jensen, Anne Marie S. – Evaluation Practice, 1991
Hypertextual ways to think about evaluation are explored, and hypertext computer programs are discussed. Hypertext is useful as a way to search out and link related material. It can help maintain, manipulate, and analyze nonnumerical evaluation data. (SLD)
Descriptors: Computer Software, Computer Uses in Education, Data Analysis, Educational Assessment

Barrick, Christina B.; Cogliano, Janet F. – Evaluation Practice, 1993
The efforts of a committee to involve stakeholders, faculty in a department of nursing, in a program evaluation for accreditation, are described. Experiences over a five-year period are described, with an emphasis on strategies that fostered success. Implications for other educational evaluations are reviewed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Accountability, Accreditation (Institutions), Case Studies, College Faculty

Berk, Richard A. – Evaluation Practice, 1994
Three trends that are projected for the future of evaluation are greater use of evaluation research in litigation; increasing integration of the social and natural sciences for certain kinds of evaluation research; and a move away from conventional statistics toward data analysis. (SLD)
Descriptors: Court Litigation, Data Analysis, Evaluation Methods, Evaluation Research

Witkin, Belle Ruth – Evaluation Practice, 1994
Practices in needs assessment are reviewed since 1981, the year the federal government changed the role it plays in promoting needs assessment in the public sector. The review is based on reports published to 1993 and indicates that needs assessment is flourishing in a variety of settings. (SLD)
Descriptors: Data Collection, Elementary Secondary Education, Evaluation Methods, Evaluation Problems

Slaughter, Helen B. – Evaluation Practice, 1991
Difficulties faced in evaluations that include data in a language not native to the evaluators or that lie outside the evaluators' cultural experience are discussed. Improvements to credibility and fairness from using a cross-cultural, bilingual evaluation are described and illustrated through evaluation of a language immersion program in Hawaii.…
