Thompson, Bruce – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1979
The Analysis of Learning Potential was developed to assist counselors and teachers to formulate more realistic academic expectations in view of the pupil's estimated learning potential. Results of the study suggest that the instrument does have the predictive characteristics that might be expected of a general academic aptitude measure. (Author)
Descriptors: Academic Aptitude, Counselors, Elementary Education, Learning Processes
Donlon, Thomas F.; And Others – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1979
Many expectations concerning performance on educational and psychological tests are sex-stereotyped. Females, for example, are expected to do better on verbal tests, while males are expected to do better on mathematical tests. These expectations are being reevaluated in terms of the cultural influences that may underlie them. (Author)
Descriptors: Item Analysis, Research Projects, Sex Discrimination, Sex Stereotypes
Jepsen, David A.; Dustin, Richard – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1984
Describes a simulation method for observing career information-seeking behavior. The Career Information Request (CIR) was tested at a Career Development Day for 53 high school juniors. No clear pattern of internal consistency was found among students' responses to the seven information opportunities. (JAC)
Descriptors: Career Development, High School Students, High Schools, Information Seeking
Feldstein, JoAnn Cohen; Gladstein, Gerald A. – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1980
Discussed four measures of empathy: Truax's Accurate Empathy Scale; Carkhuff's Empathic Understanding Scale; Barrett-Lennard's Relationship Inventory; and Truax's Relationship Inventory. Roger's concepts served as evaluative criteria. None met all criteria. Further evidence is needed of these scales' construct validities. Measures are valid if…

Harris, Robert M., Jr.; Salomone, Paul R. – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1981
Integrates a review of Rotter's theory with an analysis of the design and development of locus of control scales, and tests the reliability and validity of an abbreviated version of Rotter's Locus of Control Scale which provides practitioners with an instrument less confusing than other locus of control scales. (Author)
Descriptors: Correlation, Counseling Effectiveness, Locus of Control, Rating Scales
Hyman, Ruth Bernstein – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1979
After a brief summary of evidence for the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) as a measure of self-actualization, this article presents such a systematic summary for the inner-direction and time-competence scales; it should prove valuable for decision making. (Author)
Descriptors: Adults, Diagnostic Tests, Research Methodology, Self Actualization
Healy, Charles C.; Mourton, Don L. – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1984
Tested whether scores on the Self Directed Search relate to career development needs in a study of 138 college students. Findings showed the scores related differentially in ways predicted by Holland (1973) and supported probing whether college students earning low investigative scores were behind in their career development. (JAC)
Descriptors: Career Development, College Students, Higher Education, Personality Traits
Belcher, Marcia J.; And Others – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1984
Compared the factor patterns underlying male (N=221) and female (N=420) self-reports on the Bem Sex Role Inventory. Results showed that when males and females were compared, only one of 10 factors reached the similarity criterion, suggesting that gender can be an important confounding variable in sex role research. (JAC)
Descriptors: College Students, Factor Structure, Higher Education, Self Concept
Benner, Emily H.; And Others – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1983
Investigated the interrelationship of self-concept measures in a cross-validation study of 134 intermediate grade children. Multiple regression analysis of self-report and behavioral inference instruments supported the hypothesis that self-constructs are strongly rooted in the method by which they are assessed. (JAC)
Descriptors: Elementary School Students, Intermediate Grades, Measurement Techniques, Models
Brown, Darine F.; Hartman, Bruce – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1980
Investigated issues associated with stimulating increased return rates to a mail questionnaire among school counselors. Results show that as the number of incentives received increased, the return rates increased in a linear fashion. The incentives did not introduce response error or affect the reliability of the Counselor Function Inventory.…

Larrivee, Barbara; Bourque, Mary Lyn – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1980
Determines if teacher ratings of students' classroom behavior would be influenced by the format of the instrument. Elementary school teachers completed dual ratings of students on the Devereux Elementary School Behavior Rating Scale (DESB). Findings suggest that the two forms can be used interchangeably without biasing results. (Author)
Descriptors: Behavior Rating Scales, Classroom Environment, Comparative Analysis, Elementary School Students
Rowan, Robert W. – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1978
The predictive validity of the American College Test (ACT) for two classes totaling 2,289 students was investigated at successive intervals over four years of college. Correlational coefficients and expectancy tables substantiated the validity of the ACT for prediction of GPA, for progress, and for graduation within four years. (Author)
Descriptors: College Students, Grade Point Average, Higher Education, Predictive Measurement
Mehrens, William – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1981
Responds to the Nader report on the Educational Testing Service authored by Nairn. Major themes of the nine chapters of the report are addressed. The last sections provide comment on the responses of the Educational Testing Service. (RC)
Descriptors: Aptitude Tests, Bias, Credibility, Educational Testing
Marx, Ronald W.; Winne, Philip H. – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1980
Two studies involving a total of 837 intermediate-grade students found that multivariate analyses of self-concept inventories reveal dimensions uncovered by univariate methods. (NRB)
Descriptors: Children, Data Analysis, Intermediate Grades, Multivariate Analysis
Vacc, Nicholas A.; And Others – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1980
Discusses the Adapted Modified Role Repertory Test (AMRRT), which was developed to measure cognitive complexity in children. AMRRT scores correlated significantly with age, thus supporting the assumption that cognitive complexity increases as a function of age. Offers strong empirical support for the construct validity of the AMRRT. (Author)
