Smith, Lauren D.; Valentine, Anne; Moore Simas, Tiffany A.; Parish, Susan L.; Levy, Alanna; Mitra, Monika – Journal of Intellectual & Developmental Disability, 2023
Background: Research suggests that women with intellectual and developmental disabilities are at increased risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes. Further, they report unmet perinatal care needs. This qualitative study examined clinician perspectives on barriers to providing perinatal care to women with intellectual and developmental disabilities.…

Chandler, Michael – Journal of Cognition and Development, 2016
The next several pages are intended as a "Commentary" on the six target articles bundled together as a Special Issue of the "Journal of Cognition and Development"--literature reviews and research reports all intended to "build bridges" between the study of cognitive development in typical and atypical populations.

Morgan, Paul L.; Farkas, George; Hillemeier, Marianne M.; Maczuga, Steve – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2016
We analyzed two nationally representative, longitudinal data sets of U.S. children to identify risk factors for persistent mathematics difficulties (PMD). Results indicated that children from low socioeconomic households are at elevated risk of PMD at 48 and 60 months of age, as are children with cognitive delays, identified developmental delays…

Davis, N. M.; Ford, G. W.; Anderson, P. J.; Doyle, L. W. – Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, 2007
The aims of this study were to determine the motor outcome of extremely-low-birthweight (ELBW; less than 1000g) or very preterm (less than 28wks) children compared with normal birthweight (NBW) children, to establish the perinatal associations of developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and its cognitive and behavioural consequences. Participants…

Park, Rebecca J.; Bolton, Patrick F. – Autism: The International Journal of Research and Practice, 2001
This study investigated the role of obstetric complications in determining phenotypic manifestations in tuberous sclerosis (TS), a disorder associated with autism spectrum disorders. Comparison of 43 children with TS and 40 unaffected siblings found children with TS experienced more obstetric complications, but these were related to mild rather…

Chew, Li-Jin; Takanohashi, Asako; Bell, Michael – Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Research Reviews, 2006
Inflammation during the perinatal period has become a recognized risk factor for developmental brain injuries over the past decade or more. To fully understand the relationship between inflammation and brain development, a comprehensive knowledge about the immune system within the brain is essential. Microglia are resident immune cells within the…

McGee, A. M.; And Others – Educational Psychology: An International Journal of Experimental Educational Psychology, 1993
Reports on the assessment of 636 children who were identified in a 1984 Scottish low birth weight study. Discusses adaptations of standardized tests that made it possible to test 27 children who had been judged as impossible to test because of developmental disabilities. (CFR)

Feldman, Heidi M.; And Others – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1992
Ten two-year-old children with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), a brain injury associated with prematurity, were evaluated using language samples. The five children with delayed cognitive ability produced significantly fewer lexical tokens and spontaneous verbal utterances than did chronological age-matched nondelayed PVL children. (Author/DB)

Developmentally Appropriate Psychosocial Care for Children Affected by Parental Chemical Dependence.

Cunningham, Rhonda – Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, 1992
Discusses appropriate care for children affected prenatally or after birth by parental chemical dependence. There is increasing evidence that environmental intervention by professionals and other caring adults can alleviate these children's distress. Maximizing their development also depends on implementation of child welfare protections and the…
