Tabacu, Lucia M.; Watson, Silvana Maria; Chezar, Laura C.; Gable, Robert; Oliveira, Célia R.; Lopes, João – Preventing School Failure, 2020
We examined the type of errors on multiplication and division computation problems of 326 rising fifth graders enrolled in four elementary schools in Northern Portugal. We further examined whether there was a difference in the number of errors across age and whether there was an association between students' performance on number knowledge and…

Heitzmann, Nicole; Fischer, Frank; Fischer, Martin R. – Instructional Science: An International Journal of the Learning Sciences, 2018
To diagnose classroom situations is crucial for teachers' everyday practice. The approach of worked examples with errors seems promising to support the diagnosis of classroom situations in student teachers (Stark et al. in "Learn Instr" 21(1):22-33, 2011). To enhance that approach, error-explanation prompts and an adaptable feedback…

Miller, James H.; Milam, Cheryl P. – Learning Disabilities Research, 1987
The study investigated types of errors made by learning disabled children by analyzing written responses to multiplication and division problems. Error classifications are discussed, and possible causes are suggested. The importance of thorough investigation of errors by teachers is stressed. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Computation, Diagnostic Teaching, Division, Elementary Secondary Education

LeBlanc, Judith M.; And Others – Journal of Special Education Technology, 1985
The need for developing a technology of teaching that equals current sophistication of microcomputer technology is addressed. The importance of principles of learning and behavior analysis is emphasized. Potential roles of stimulus control and precise error analysis in educational program development and in prescription of specific learning…

Campbell, James – Use of English, 1982
Describes a diagnostic and remedial spelling approach used with high school students. (HOD)
Descriptors: Diagnostic Teaching, Error Patterns, Remedial Instruction, Secondary Education

Mevarech, Zemira R. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1983
Two studies involving 242 college students are described. First, a 15-item test on means was given, identifying students' misconceptions. In the experiment that followed, most students were able to acquire the appropriate schema of statistical concepts by engaging in diagnostic activities embedded in a feedback-corrective procedure. (MNS)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Diagnostic Teaching, Error Patterns, Higher Education

Ronau, Robert N. – Mathematics Teacher, 1986
Several examples of mathematical diagnosis using microcomputer software are presented, with possible future considerations suggested. Three limitations of the software are discussed. (MNS)
Descriptors: Computer Software, Diagnostic Teaching, Error Patterns, Mathematics Instruction

Daniels, Harry – British Journal of Special Education, 1988
The article suggests use of a miscue analysis of mathematics problems in children with learning difficulties. Analysis of errors, past learning, and monitoring of progress are illustrated with a case study of a 10-year-old British learning disabled boy. (DB)
Descriptors: Case Studies, Diagnostic Teaching, Elementary Secondary Education, Error Patterns
Hopkins, Martha H. – Pointer, 1986
Specific procedures for assessing a handicapped student's mastery level within a continuum of mathematics skills are described, and analysis of error patterns discussed. (CL)
Descriptors: Diagnostic Teaching, Disabilities, Elementary Secondary Education, Error Patterns
Borasi, Raffaella; And Others – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1985
Many worthwhile mathematical activities can be generated by an overgeneralization. Some conjectures and their verification are described, with some exploration of historical procedures. (MNS)
Descriptors: Diagnostic Teaching, Educational Research, Error Patterns, History
Borasi, Raffaella; And Others – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1985
A set of brief reflections about different aspects of mathematical errors and their roles in education is given. The nature and variety of errors and their positive use in learning mathematics are highlighted. (MNS)
Descriptors: Diagnostic Teaching, Educational Philosophy, Elementary Secondary Education, Error Patterns
Rittner, Max – Special Education in Canada, 1982
The article reviews the development of mathematics error analysis as a means of diagnosing students' cognitive reasoning. Errors specific to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are described, and suggestions for remediation are provided. (CL)
Descriptors: Addition, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Diagnostic Teaching

Clark, H. Clifford – Arithmetic Teacher, 1986
Diagnostic evaluation is a major way to help students overcome errors. How such evaluation can be done is discussed, with comments on what should be checked and recorded by the teacher. (MNS)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Diagnostic Teaching, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics
Sleeman, Derek H. – AEDS Monitor, 1985
Reports results obtained when 24 14-year-old students were presented with algebra tasks by a computer-based modeling system and, four months later, comparable paper and pencil tests together with detailed interviews. Comparison of the results revealed profound misunderstandings of algebraic notation and identified classes of strategies used by…

Sadowski, Barbara R.; McIlveen, Delayne Houston – Arithmetic Teacher, 1984
What two teachers found when they took a close look at the results of a sentence-solving test given in grades four and five is reported. Error patterns appeared less frequently after instruction but recurred on retention tests. How students can be helped is suggested. (MNS)
