In response to the need of adults, especially in rural areas, for more flexibility in course scheduling, a Welsh community education agency designed a home-based learning program. Courses typically consisted of a tutorial every three weeks, homework, self-tests, and assignments submitted by mail. (SK)

From tape recordings of 30 tutorial sessions at the Open University it is concluded that the teacher's role is less than the ideal of facilitator of learning; there is great pressure from students for the teacher to instruct rather than discuss the course material. (MSE)

Describes the design, implementation, and results of a project which investigated the needs of adult correspondence students outside the Open University and the effectiveness of a local counselling system in helping them to complete their courses successfully. Detailed analysis of student attendance at British tutorial sessions indicate that mathematics tutorials are relatively well attended and attendance correlates well with course results.
