Shill, Harold B. – College and Research Libraries, 1980
Reports the findings of a six-year West Virginia University study that tested the "direct access" debate in its main library after undergoing the transition from closed to open stacks. Circulation, book availability, and search and library-use statistics are provided, and their implications are discussed. (Author/JD)
Descriptors: Academic Libraries, Library Circulation, Library Research, Tables (Data)
Wall, Terry – Library Research, 1980
Reports a study of the distribution of use among users of a short loan collection in an academic library. Results indicate the most active one-third of all users generate between two-thirds and three-quarters of all use. A brief list of references is provided. (Author/SW)
Descriptors: Academic Libraries, Information Utilization, Library Circulation, Library Research

Baker, S. L. – Library Quarterly, 1986
Based on a doctoral dissertation, this paper describes a study of why displays of books increase use. Two hypotheses were tested using standard pretest-posttest experimental designs at two small Illinois public libraries. Increased accessibility and visibility were found to be causes, while narrowing the browser's choice was not. (Author/EM)
Descriptors: Display Aids, Fiction, Library Circulation, Library Research

Goehlert, Robert – Journal of Academic Librarianship, 1978
Describes a book availability study using the ACCESS retrieval and delivery system for the evaluation of library services. (CWM)
Descriptors: Academic Libraries, Delivery Systems, Faculty, Library Circulation

Broadus, Robert N. – Library Resources and Technical Services, 1980
Extracts five conclusions from a survey of library material use studies: (1) recorded use in many libraries is low; (2) use within the library parallels circulation; (3) past use predicts future use; (4) recent materials are used more frequently; and (5) Americans use few foreign language materials. (FM)

McGrath, William E. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1979
Two methods are presented by which the librarian can forecast book circulation by subject. The shelflist model treats the number of library books as a control variable, while the other defines the dependent variable as the proportion of the shelflist circulated. (FM)
Descriptors: Libraries, Library Circulation, Library Research, Methods
Pu, Hsiao-Tieh – Proceedings of the ASIST Annual Meeting, 2002
Presents a user-based approach to exploring the possibility of adding user-oriented class associations to hierarchical library classification schemes. Classes not grouped in the same subject hierarchies yet relevant to users' knowledge are obtained by analyzing a log book of a university library's circulation records, using collaborative filtering…
Descriptors: Academic Libraries, Classification, Higher Education, Information Retrieval

Ettelt, Harold J. – Community & Junior College Libraries, 1985
Describes a study conducted at Columbia-Greene Community College's library to determine whether a book's previous non-use is indicative of future non-use; whether books are progressively less likely to be used with time; the circulation costs of weeding previously unused books; and the circulation rates of old and new books. (DMM)
Descriptors: College Libraries, Community Colleges, Library Circulation, Library Collection Development
Brooks, Terrence A. – Library Research, 1982
A sample of library-output statistics measuring circulation, reference, and in-library use was collected from 76 libraries and tested for redundancy, correlation, and variation using time-series analysis to test the Relative Fidelity of Measurement Model (RFM). The 275 sample statistics correlated in an unpredicted pattern. Twenty-three sources…
Descriptors: Correlation, Library Circulation, Library Research, Library Services

Dishnow, Ruth E. – ALAN Review, 1994
Presents data from a study of middle school library circulation of biography titles in two school years. Analyzes circulation counts, periods when biographies were checked out, favored subjects, and popular titles. (HB)
Descriptors: Adolescent Literature, Biographies, English Instruction, Library Circulation

Ottensmann, John R. – Library & Information Science Research, 1995
Describes the development of a gravity model based upon principles of spatial interaction to predict the circulation of libraries in the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library (Indiana). The model effectively predicted past circulation figures and was tested by predicting future library circulation, particularly for a new branch library.…
Descriptors: Branch Libraries, Futures (of Society), Gravity (Physics), Library Circulation
McKee, Penelope – Library Research, 1981
Describes a two-part book circulation use study conducted to find a simple inexpensive and effective method of weeding a public library branch collection, to determine whether weeding increases circulation, and to compare results with Slote's results. Seven tables, one appendix, and 32 references are provided. (RBF)
Descriptors: Books, Branch Libraries, Foreign Countries, Library Circulation

Ho, Jeannette; Crowley, Gwyneth H. – Journal of Academic Librarianship, 2003
Explored user perceptions of dependability and accuracy of Texas A&M library services through focus groups. Reports user difficulties in locating materials, inaccurate catalog and circulation records, inadequate signage, searching the online catalog, and late notification of interlibrary loan arrivals; and discusses the library's efforts to…
Descriptors: Academic Libraries, Focus Groups, Higher Education, Library Catalogs

Knutson, Gunnar – College and Research Libraries, 1991
Describes an experiment conducted at the University of Illinois at Chicago that was designed to determine whether adding a substantial number of subject headings would raise circulation rates. The effects of added contents notes, keyword searching, browsing, and displays on the online catalog are examined, and further research is suggested. (27…

Alabi, G. A. – Microcomputers for Information Management: An International Journal for Library and Information Services, 1985
This overview of an experimental automated circulation system at Ibadan University (Nigeria) includes a discussion of system hardware, software, program structure, file structure, and system functions (charges, discharges, renews, overdues, fines, reservations, recalls, and assisted query). Statistics on manual and automated systems related to…
