McGrath, William E.; And Others – College and Research Libraries, 1979
Student circulation of books in 43 major academic disciplines were examined for two patterns: (1) the extent to which students majoring in one subject use the books of another and (2) the extent to which books in one subject are read by students majoring in others. Graduate and undergraduate patterns are compared. (Author/JD)

Brooks, Terrence A. – Library and Information Science Research, An International Journal, 1984
Two sophisticated--autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), straight-line regression--and two naive--simple average, monthly average--forecasting techniques were used to forecast monthly circulation totals of 34 public libraries. Comparisons of forecasts and actual totals revealed that ARIMA and monthly average methods had smallest mean…

Rao, Pal V. – College and Research Libraries, 1982
Investigates relationship between number of card catalog access points provided for a group of randomly selected education book titles in academic library and number of times the same titles circulated in specified period of time. Research method, sample selection, and data collection and analysis are discussed. Twelve references are provided.…

Winkler, Karen J. – Chronicle of Higher Education, 1993
The history of reading is a fast growing and controversial area of the emerging field of book history. Methods for researching the evolution and patterns of literacy and of reading habits are not yet established, and knowledge of information sources is still limited. (MSE)

Beheshti, Jamshid; Tague, Jean M. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1984
Utilizing 11 years of University of Saskatchewan circulation transactions, it is shown that P. M. Morse's Markov model of book use fits approximately 99 percent of data for whole collection and for three subject areas; contrary to his assumptions, one of the model's parameters is time dependent. Thirteen references are included. (EJS)

Morton, Walter W. – Library Resources and Technical Services, 1984
This study of 50 pairs of popular (written for layman) and technical (designed for those having specialized knowledge in particular discipline) monographs matched by subject, date of publication, and date of acquisition indicates that although technical works circulated more than popular, difference was not statistically significant. Seven…

Cook, Kevin L. – Journal of Academic Librarianship, 1985
Describes methodology for the gathering of useful collection management data and reports results of study which analyzed circulation data and sampled in-library use at a Government Printing Office depository to explore circulation and in-library use frequency distributions, circulation and in-library use, and age of publications used in the…

McGrath, William E. – College and Research Libraries, 1983
Circulated library books classified according to academic subject areas and student majors were used to determine relative subject similarities in 40 academic departments. Use of multidimensional scaling to compute similarities in undergraduate and graduate circulation and implications for library collection development and storage are described.…

Peat, W. Leslie – Journal of Academic Librarianship, 1981
Reviews the controversy surrounding the Pittsburgh study of library circulation and collection usage and proposes the use of citation analysis techniques as an acceptable method for measuring research use of a research library which will complement circulation studies. Five references are listed. (RAA)

Weaver-Meyers, Pat; And Others – College and Research Libraries, 1985
University of Oklahoma Libraries conducted a cost study of circulation service-desk operations. Using percentages of staff time occupied in particular tasks, pay rates, indirect costs, and overhead, total costs were computed on task-by-task basis. Information served as basis for reorganization of work assignments and revision of staff scheduling.…

Clark, Philip M.; Benson, James – RQ, 1985
Proposes and investigates feasibility of using three new variables in addition to simple activity counts in measuring reference services: (1) user questioning regardless of where activity occurs; (2) treating individual user and question as unit of analysis; and (3) examination of questioning in context of other library use. (11 references) (EJS)

Aguilar, William – Library Resources and Technical Services, 1984
Circulation statistics for 198 books randomly selected from nonjuvenile collection at Allerton Public Library were ascertained. Comparison of experimental group (all related catalog entries withdrawn from card catalog) and control group (all catalog entries left intact) showed no statistically significant influence of removal of cards on…

Brooks, Terrence A. – College and Research Libraries, 1984
Four methods were used to forecast monthly circulation totals in 15 midwestern academic libraries: dummy time-series regression, lagged time-series regression, simple average (straight-line forecasting), monthly average (naive forecasting). In tests of forecasting accuracy, dummy regression method and monthly mean method exhibited smallest average…

Schwarz, Philip – College and Research Libraries, 1983
Data gathered in application of Paul Kantor's demand-adjusted shelf availability model to medium-sized academic library indicate significant differences in shelf availability when data are analyzed by last circulation date, acquisition date, and imprint date, and when they are gathered during periods of low and high use. Ten references are cited.…
