Alo, Richard A.; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1987
Presents a mathematical model of a decision maker subject to goal uncertainty which shows that a dominant course of action will always emerge. The theory of multivalued functions is used to express goal uncertainty, and a specific example is described to provide insight into how the procedure works in practice. (Author/EM)

Kleyle, R.; de Korvin, A. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1990
Presents a formal method for making important one-shot decisions based on an elimination process which uses sequentially acquired information and is based on a conditional belief structure. The routine updating of the structure as information accumulates is based on Dempster's rule of combination. (15 references) (EAM)

Anderson, John R.; Milson, Robert – Psychological Review, 1989
It is argued that human memory is adaptively designed and that much can be learned by understanding its adaptiveness. The information-retrieval problem is framed, and optimal memory behavior is derived. Applying this framework to the classic free-recall paradigm is discussed. (SLD)

Hayes, Robert M.; Borko, Harold – Information Processing and Management, 1983
Presents results from study of mathematical models (Cobb-Douglas model, mixture of Poissons, inverse effects of distance, weighted entropy) relating to usage of information systems, and notes papers developed during study which provide three types of analysis--literature reviews, analytical studies, and tests of models. Six references are…

Yovits, M. C.; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1987
Summarizes earlier research in the theory of information flow and its application to practical situations and to the relationship between information and the user's knowledge state. A model for creating information profiles is presented which mathematically represents changes in decision making effectiveness as a function of specific documents.…

Chen, Ye-Sho; And Others – Information Processing and Management, 1994
Investigates the relationships between the parameters of the Simon-Yule model and the shapes of three bibliometric distributions: Lotka's Law of Scientific Productivity; Bradford's Law of Bibliometric Scattering; and Zipf's Law of Word Frequency. The results indicate that the probability of a new entry determines the characteristics of all three…

Pfitzner, Charles Barry – Community/Junior College Quarterly of Research and Practice, 1987
Applies the Box-Jenkins time series methodology to enrollment data for the Virginia community college system. Describes the enrollment data set, the Box-Jenkins approach, and the forecasting results. Discusses the value of one-quarter ahead enrollment forecasts and implications for practice. Provides a technical discussion of the model. (DMM)
