The National Survey of Science, Mathematics, and Social Studies Education for 1977 resulted in a series of six machine-readable data files (MRDF) summarizing the responses of teachers, principals, superintendents, local district supervisors, and state supervisors from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The purpose of this survey was to provide the National Science Foundation (NSF) with current accurate data about the following curriculum-related topics: Number of Years Teaching, Sources of Information, Needs for Assistance, Time Spent in Instruction, Teaching Techniques, Use of Audiovisual Materials, Use of Federally-funded Curriculum Materials, Attendance at NSF-Sponsored Activities, Problems Affecting Instruction, Course Offerings, State and Local Guidelines, Use of Textbooks and Other Curriculum Materials, and Role of Teachers and Supervisors in Elementary and Secondary Education in Science, Mathematics, and Social Studies. The six distinct files are: Teachers File, Principals File, Enrollment File, District Program File, District Superintendents File, State Supervisors File. Ninety-two (92) different programs in science, mathematics, and social studies were identified, along with corresponding course materials and textbooks. TYPE OF SURVEY: National Survey. RESPONDENTS: Principals (1,177-84%); School District Supervisors (1,893=72%); School Superintendents (356=73%); State School Supervisors (173=90%); Teachers (4,829=76%). (WTB)
