College Trustee Study [machine-readable data file].
Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NJ. Institutional Research Program for Higher Education.
In the fall of 1967, during the 1967-68 academic year, a large scale survey (the "College Trustee Study") was made of members of college and university governing boards. A questionnaire was mailed to the trustees of over 500 colleges and universities in the United States. Responses were received from 5,180 college board trustee members. The survey aimed at discovering who sits on higher education governing boards, what they do, and how they feel about current educational issues. The machine-readable data file (MRDF) resulting from this study records 244 variables for each respondent. The file is arranged by respondent. The respondent's institution is identified by type, affiliation, size, and geographic region. Each respondent is identified by race, sex, religious affiliation, income, board memberships, education, occupation, background, and previous relationship to school. Among the responses gathered are: their role as trustee; familiarity with higher education books and periodicals; amount of time spent on board meetings; fund-raising activities; their views on desirable characteristics of governing boards; opinions on the views of selected U.S. political leaders of the 1960s; attitudes towards educational policies; political and social views; financial donations to colleges. Publications in which the conclusions of this survey have been reported are: (1) "College and University Trustees: Their Backgrounds, Roles, and Educational Attitudes" (ED 028 704); (2) "The New College Trustee: Some Predictions for the 1970s" (ED 045 013).
