Sage Research Methods Cases
This case study shares the process of a research team at a mid-sized college in the Midwestern United States. The research team consisted of three faculty members, a graduate research assistant, and five undergraduate student workers. The goal of the project was to increase the use of physical activity in classrooms from Kindergarten to sixth grade. To achieve this goal, the research team developed an interactive teacher training and resource campaign consisting of videos, e-mail newsletters, and teacher mailbox resources. In 2014 to 2015, 12 teachers and 153 students from 2 community schools participated in a study aiming to increase teachers' utilization of classroom physical activity. We theorized that if teachers felt supported by their peers and administrators and had the necessary resources, their implementation of classroom physical activity would rise, resulting in an increase in on-task behavior and physical activity of their students. The research team collected and analyzed quantitative (e.g., accelerometry data, surveys) and qualitative (e.g., interviews) data from students and teachers. This case report highlights the methodology involved in developing the intervention as well as how to utilize methods to improve intervention implementation during and after a pilot project.
