Study of Graduates and Dropouts to Determine Need for Vocational Career Orientation 1975-1978.
Rougeau, Amos; And Others
This report summarizes responses to a study of graduates and dropouts to obtain information to validate or improve the vocational career orientation program in Arkansas. Data are separated and arranged into these categories: students, vocational career orientation teachers, counselors, principals, superintendents, vice presidents of academic affairs, and variables by sex, race, and size of school. Each section contains tables and corresponding summaries. These findings are among those listed as responsive to problems analysed by the study: (1) over 59% of the students indicated individual guidance as more useful than group counseling; (2) 35% were satisfied with career occupational choice; (3) lack of interest in school led to dropping out of vocational career orientation classes and secondary school; (4) graduates had received better class scheduling and counseling services than most dropouts; (5) annual income of 80% of graduates and 60% of dropouts is less than $5000; (6) factors motivating both groups to enter their present occupation were working with others and the security of having a competent supervisor; and (7) 60% of the participants felt the principal should give strong leadership. Appendixes, amounting to over one-half of the report, provide response differences on all variables on the basis of sex, race, and size of school. (YLB)
