A Report on the Pennsylvania Executive Academy. Interest Survey, 1982-83.
Brickley, Richard R.
A 1982 questionnaire survey of 4,800 Pennsylvania public school administrators sought to determine what topics the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) should present in its "Executive Academy" programs. The Executive Academy was created to help the state's school districts and intermediate units improve their administrative and educational practices. The questionnaire asked respondents to rate each of 42 possible inservice topics on a Likert-type scale of importance; list their top 3 interests; suggest a priority interest not already included; supply data on their district's enrollment, urban or rural location, number of school buildings, and membership in one of the five "waves" of PDE's school improvement project; and provide information on their own position, responsibilities, experience, and previous Executive Academy attendance. The survey's 800 respondents assigned first priority to instructional leadership, budgeting, motivating, personnel development and training, time management, and team building, in that order. Among the priority topics suggested by respondents were curriculum design and computer use in curriculum and administration. The survey findings hold implications about what topics, information, and activities PDE's 1982-83 Executive Academies should present. Lengthy appendices provide more detailed data and copies of the questionnaire and of a related report. (RW)
