The distribution of academic programs in Connecticut as of July 1984 and recent trends in program approval are reviewed. Attention is focused on planned curricula that award certificates or degrees and that comprise five groupings: behavioral and social sciences, general and interdisciplinary studies, humanities, occupational/professional studies, and sciences. Information is provided on: the number of specific accredited programs within each grouping and the degree levels offered; the number of accredited programs at each institution by level of award; the distribution of accredited programs by public/private sector, program grouping, and degree level; new accredited programs by degree level and year; and programs licensed but not yet accredited in Connecticut as of July 31, 1984. More than half of the 1,700 accredited programs were classified as occupational/professional, and two-thirds of new programs were in this grouping; the public sector offered the majority of occupational/professional programs; humanities programs were the second most numerous among program offerings in the state, and over three-quarters of these programs were offered by private colleges; and the private sector is developing more new programs than the public sector, accounting for almost two-thirds of all programs accredited since 1979.
