Fiscal year (FY) 1985 results of the annual unit cost study of the Illinois public community colleges are presented, based on data on course offerings, enrollments, and costs. After an introductory overview, data and analyses are presented, covering FY 1985 net instructional unit cost compared with previous years; net instructional unit cost, full instructional unit cost and total institutional unit cost; net instructional unit cost; indirect instructional support unit cost; unit cost in seven instructional categories; net instructional unit cost by subject area; and unit cost comparative analysis. Highlighted findings include the following: (1) the state average net instructional unit cost had increased from $79.24 in FY 1984 to $84.87 in FY 1985, an increase of $5.63 (7.1%); (2) in FY 1985, net instructional unit cost was $84.87, full instructional unit cost was $88.42, and total institutional unit cost was $93.89; and (3) public service costs, which represent the cost of non-credit community education and community service activities provided by the colleges to governmental agencies, business and industry, and the community itself, increased by 18% over FY 1984 to $31,994,431.
