Teachers: Opinions and Status. ERS Educator Opinion Poll.
Educational Research Service, Arlington, VA.
This 1986 poll of 1,176 U.S. public school teachers (K-12) selected at random elicited their views on ability grouping, grade standards for interscholastic sports, ideal class size, professional development opportunities, and preferences for programs to be funded. Status and experience questions covered topics such as current class size, number of years of teaching experience, annual salary, eligibility for merit pay, education, professional affiliations, and length of contract year. Descriptive information, including school enrollment, racial-ethnic mix of the student population, and availability of teacher aides were also included. Forty-six tables report teacher responses according to total responses, teaching grade level, sex, career plans, and age. A brief composite profile of teachers is given, indicating sexual majority of teachers, average age, average years teaching and at same school district, average working days per year, average annual salary, average percentage of time spent on instruction and planning, average class size, and career goals. Profiles of teachers at different grade levels are noted. A comparison of career and undecided teachers is presented, examining differences and similarities, and a technical note calls attention to the limitations of the data. (WTH)
