In January 1986, the Employment and Training Administration sponsored a special study designed to answer some of the questions about displaced workers. The principal findings of the survey included the following: a total of 10.8 million workers 20 years of age and over lost jobs because of plant closings or employment cut-backs over the January 1981-January 1986 period; of the 5.l million workers who had lost jobs at which they had worked at least 3 years, about two-thirds were reemployed as of January 1986; close to 18 percent of those displaced were unemployed when surveyed in January 1986; of the 3.4 million workers who found work following displacement, 2.7 million were working at full-time wage and salary jobs with more than half of those reemployed earning as much or more in their new jobs as in their lost jobs; about 2 of 3 displaced workers were men; the geographic distribution of displaced workers was heavily concentrated in the East North Central states; more than 1 of 3 workers over 55 years of age left the labor force after losing their jobs; and reemployment was more difficult for Black and Hispanic workers.
