Assessment of Treatment Outcomes in Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare. Technical Report.
Russell, Keith C.
Outdoor behavioral healthcare (OBH) programs treat adolescents with emotional, behavioral, and substance abuse problems using wilderness therapy and related therapeutic and educational curricula. Elements of OBH are designed to reveal and address problem behaviors, foster personal and social responsibility, and enhance clients' emotional growth. This report presents outcomes on 858 clients of 8 private-placement OBH programs. Treatment outcomes were evaluated through client self-report and parent assessment of adolescent well-being at admission and discharge. The development, use, and validity of the Youth-Outcome Questionnaire are discussed. Clients were in OBH treatment for an average of 38 days. Clients were predominantly male, aged 16-18, with a variety of disruptive behavioral, mood, and substance disorders as their primary psychiatric diagnosis. Over half had a history of outpatient treatment. Both self-reports and parent reports indicate that participation in OBH programs led to significant reductions in the severity of behavioral and emotional symptoms. A majority (55 percent) of clients had ratings at discharge that were compatible with a normal range of symptoms. (Contains 38 references and 20 data tables and figures.) (Author/SV)
