Faculty Reminders to Reconnect: Engaging Community College Faculty to Aid in Adult Learners' Persistence. Working Paper #2
Tennessee Board of Regents - The College System of Tennessee
Each year from 2018 to 2020, roughly 16,000 students participated in Tennessee Reconnect at community colleges across the state. However, fewer than half of those Reconnect students persisted to the following year as grant participants. To promote Reconnect students' reapplication and persistence, Nashville State and Southwest Tennessee Community College piloted an intervention in fall 2020. In this pilot, faculty members at Nashville and Southwest devoted class time to remind their students to reapply to Reconnect. In addition to positively impacting Reconnect students' reapplication rates, the reminders also positively impacted Reconnect students' reapplication and persistence rates. The reminders had the biggest impact on traditionally underrepresented Reconnect students. This paper: (1) discusses the Reconnect Persistence Challenge; (2) addresses persistence at Nashville State and Southwest Tennessee Community College; (3) addresses reapplication through faculty reminders; and (4) provides key takeaways and next steps to promote success for Reconnect students.
