Bardes, D'Ellen – Library Software Review, 1986
Provides an overview of how optical storage technologies--videodisk, Write-Once disks, and CD-ROM CD-I disks are built into and controlled via DEC, Apple, Atari, Amiga, and IBM PC compatible microcomputers. Several available products are noted and a list of producers is included. (EM)

Kolner, Stuart J. – Online, 1985
This third article in a five-part series focuses on personal computer software (instructional packages for the computer itself). Topics covered include 11 categories of microcomputer software, evaluation and selection, purchase, version numbers and upgrades, copy protection, disk operating system commands, preparation of master disk, batch files,…

White, William – Microform Review, 1991
Discusses the basic principles of the application of microfilm (analog) and electronic (digital) technologies for data storage. Image quality is examined, searching and retrieval capabilities are considered, and hardcopy output resolution is described. It is concluded that microfilm is still the preferred archival medium. Tenopir, Carol – Microcomputers for Information Management: An International Journal for Library and Information Services, 1985
Discussion of issues surrounding the microcomputer's capability to download online search results covers types of downloading; scope of downloading; legal issues (copyright and database contract provisions and policies); and effects of downloading (widespread pricing changes, and provision of database subsets by database producers). (MBR)

Jansen, Arnold A. J. – Electronic Library, 1984
This paper proposes solutions to technical, copyright, and financial problems of downloading (storage in machine-readable form at user's site as result of searches in machine-readable file held on vendor's computer). Challenges of downloading--establishing ground rules, new pricing structure, new sales possibilities--are discussed. Six references…

Rodgers, Don – Optical Information Systems, 1986
Explains steps in process of tranforming data from current form to one ready for publication on CD-ROM, i.e., disc layout, file format, building the master tape, and input to mastering facility. The conversion of a product currently existing in book form into a computer-based searchable database is described. (MBR)
Descriptors: Computer Software, Databases, Guidelines, Information Storage

Malinconico, S. Michael – Journal of Library Automation, 1980
Examines design functions of present file organizations in the context of available data storage devices and identifies current developmental trends. (Author/RAA)
Descriptors: Computer Science, Computer Storage Devices, Databases, Design

Cuadra, Carlos A. – Electronic Library, 1983
Addresses the question of whether interest in downloading into local electronic libraries is a reflection of user needs or is being generated by those who have something to sell. Growth of online services, growth of local computer capacity, purposes of a local electronic library, and sources of data are highlighted. (EJS)

Eddison, Betty – Database, 1986
This article discusses sources from which information used in in-house databases can be obtained and enumerates points to consider in database building phase (test database design ideas against external database if available, make arrangements for data entry, exercise quality control). Fourteen contractors or sources of computerized information…

Marcum, Deanna; Boss, Richard – Wilson Library Bulletin, 1982
Discusses a problem commonly encountered in library automation projects: the conversion from existing card catalog formats to machine readable catalog (MARC) records. Catalog formats, the advantages of full versus limited records, changing computer technology, the advantages of full MARC records, and record standardization are among the topics…

Videodisc/Videotext, 1982
The Video PATSEARCH system consists of a microcomputer with a special keyboard and two display screens which accesses the PATSEARCH database of United States government patents on the Bibliographic Retrieval Services (BRS) search system. The microcomputer retrieves text from BRS and matching graphics from an analog optical videodisc. (Author/JJD)
Descriptors: Computer Graphics, Databases, Indexes, Information Retrieval

Sprehe, J. Timothy – Government Information Quarterly, 1992
Discusses the importance of the next article in this issue, which deals with the acceptance of electronic or optical forms of data as evidence during litigation. The collection and storage of data in new formats is described, and the need for technological knowledge for attorneys acting as general counsel to agencies is discussed. (LRW)
Descriptors: Court Litigation, Data Collection, Databases, Information Storage
Bovee, Donna – Optical Information Systems, 1990
Discusses digital imaging technology and examines document database conversion considerations. Two types of document imaging systems are described: (1) a work in process system, and (2) a storage and retrieval system. Conversion methodology is outlined, and a document conversion scenario is presented as a practical guide to conversion. (LRW)

Whittaker, Robert – 1985
This presented paper offers an elementary description of database characteristics and then provides a survey of databases that may be useful to the teacher and researcher in Slavic and East European languages and literatures. The survey focuses on commercial databases that are available, usable, and needed. Individual databases discussed include:…

Trefethen, Dan – 1978
The results of personal interviews with 18 of the more experienced online searchers in Washington State are presented. A profile of respondents determines the experience of each in searching in years, number of searches per month, vendors used, and most used data bases. This information is used to analyze the answers given to questions about the…
