It is argued that part-time study has been a tradition in British higher education since the early nineteenth century but that expansion of access to higher education and changes in financing have shifted attention away from this phenomenon. Factors influencing the balance of part- and full-time enrollment are chronicled. (MSE)

Part-time first degree courses have grown rapidly in Britain in the last decade, but little research has been done on this growth and on the part-time students themselves. Reasons for this growth, difficulties for continued growth, and characteristics of a sample of part-time business students are examined. (IS)
