Working with Children Who Have Language Difficulties. Meeting Learning Challenges
Greenspan, Stanley I.
Early Childhood Today, v20 n2 p16-17 Oct 2005
In this article, the author describes ways in which teachers can help children who exhibit problems in communicating due to language difficulties. In this particular case, the child described is very good at expressing herself, but does not seem to understand what others say to her, which limits her ability to follow directions and to interact with other children. Dr. Greenspan suggests exercising the child's receptive language by asking multiple-choice questions and playing "following directions" games. Also, when there are receptive-language problems, an audiological evaluation should be conducted to determine if the child is hearing properly.
