Point of View: Downloads, Copyright, and the Moral Responsibility Of Universities
Torrey, Kate Douglas
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n41 pB16 Jun 2007
This essay regards the licensing of digital content in universities. The author states that the academic community has overwhelmingly adopted course-management software systems such as Blackboard to distribute electronic course materials to students. She argues that such use presents a significant problem: the absence of any institutional acknowledgment that such repository for downloading course materials, which students often print out, requires compensation to authors and publishers. Course websites are replacing course packs and they are being used primarily for downloads. Academic freedom must protect the autonomy of teaching and research. Not only is this a legal question, but a moral responsibility that universities must shoulder. Universities should more actively educate faculty and students about copyright and fair use issues. The Copyright Clearance Center can play a critical role by operating a course-management system on behalf of universities that would acknowledge that universities were acting in good faith.
