The Ongoing Need for Professional Learning
Picker, Lonna S.
Journal of Jewish Education, v78 n4 p313-315 2012
While Woocher's vision for the future of Jewish education is ambitious, the ability to deliver any plan successfully depends upon the strengths of professionals and the guidance and support provided for them. This author contends that unless people create opportunities for teachers/educators to explore common issues, seek possible solutions, and share new approaches with colleagues, they will remain alone in their classrooms, deprived of the chance to grow and flourish. If people do not provide serious learning opportunities for professional educators, students will be the biggest losers. Professional development is a broad term that applies to teacher participation in programs designed not only to increase knowledge but also promote higher levels of student learning. Recognizing that people live in a consumer-oriented society and that schools are changing, the author questions how any ambitious plan for educational innovation can leave out this critical component. Active learning opportunities allow teachers to transform their teaching.
